PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (rooftop solar subsidy)

A central scheme that may give a subsidy when a household installs rooftop solar on its home.

What you may get

Central assistance may be Rs 30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and Rs 18,000 per kW for the 3rd kW (higher rates for special category states). No assistance is given beyond 3 kW. For example, a 3 kW system may get Rs 78,000, as the guidelines say.

Who it is for

Households with a residential electricity connection who install a grid connected rooftop solar system.

Main eligibility conditions

• You need a valid consumer account number with your electricity distribution company.
• The system must be on a roof, terrace, balcony or elevated structure.
• Non-residential connections do not get this assistance.

Conditions we could not check

• You need a valid electricity consumer account with your power distribution company.
• The solar system must be grid connected and fitted on a roof, terrace, balcony or elevated structure of a residential connection.
• Commercial, industrial and government connections do not get this assistance.

Who may not qualify

• Non-residential consumers (government, commercial, industrial) do not get assistance.

Documents you may need

• Electricity consumer account number
• Details and photographs of the installed system, uploaded on the portal

How to apply

1. Apply on the PM Surya Ghar national portal using your consumer account number. The portal gives an application ID.
2. Choose a vendor registered on the portal and agree on the system and terms with the vendor.
3. The vendor installs the system. Upload the details and photographs on the portal.
4. The distribution company inspects the system. After approval the assistance may be paid to your account.

Application fee

The guidelines do not state an application fee. You pay the vendor for the system and receive the subsidy afterwards.
